Introduction and Overview
“The Balanced Middle Path empowers Muslims to navigate the complexities of modern life by harmonizing tradition with tolerance. We illuminate pathways for embracing the Sunnah in an authentic balanced way, fostering understanding, growth and stability.”
The foundation of the reason to perform Umrah comes from the Sunnah. The reason is to wipe out sins and to reduce poverty and need. This purpose is affirmed in an authentic Hadith where the Prophet said (blessings and peace be upon him) as reported by Ibn ‘Abbas to have said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Perform Hajj and ‘Umrah consecutively; for they remove poverty and sin as the bellows removes impurity from iron.”. Sunan an-Nasa’i 2630 Hadith 12.
I know many Muslim men and fathers want to guide and protect their families with resources that make a difference in guiding and protecting their families. Thus, many Muslim men place a high priority on planning an Umrah for themselves and their family.
The Purpose of Umrah
Umrah is a spiritual journey to Makkah ( الرحلة الروحية إلى مكة for Muslims around the world. Umrah provides an opportunity to cleanse the soul and draw closer to Allah. I believe that performing Umrah is a life changing event. When Umrah is followed by a vacation in a nearby country that respects the sanctity and meaning of Umrah, this can enhance the divinely legislated benefits. I say this because of the risk some Muslims take by considering Umrah a vacation. Umrah is an act of worship and should never be conflated with rest and relaxation (R&R). I believe some Muslims should consider planning a brief vacation after Umrah. This vacation could, for some, remove shadowy thoughts to consider Umrah as part worship and part vacation, and Allah knows best.
I think that a vacation after Umrah is beneficial because it provides a useful gap between Umrah and then returning to the hustle and bustle of routine activities at home. Here is a detailed guide to help Muslim families plan their Umrah and a subsequent vacation.
Understanding Umrah
Umrah, often known as the lesser pilgrimage, when compared to Hajj, can be performed at any time of the year. It involves several rites performed in Makkah, including Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba) and Sa’i (walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah). While shorter and less demanding than Hajj, it is beneficial and requires careful planning.
Visa Processes for Various Passport Holders
The first step in planning your Umrah is obtaining a visa. As of recent changes, approved citizens can apply for an Umrah visa through authorized travel agencies or directly via the Saudi government’s e-visa portal. This e-visa is also valid for tourist activities in Saudi Arabia, allowing pilgrims to visit other cities and sites within the kingdom.
This table includes countries that are typically part of the eVisa program. The cost of the visa is approximately $120, but it is crucial to check for the most current fee as it can vary slightly based on exchange rates and specific processing fees. The eVisa allows for a multiple entry into Saudi Arabia and is valid for one year, with each stay permitted up to 90 days. This visa can be used for both tourism and Umrah, but not for Hajj, which requires a different visa type and process.

Documentation: Applicants need a valid passport from one of the approved countries. I listed these countries on Table 1.

The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry, proof of confirmed hotel bookings, and return flight tickets
-
Health Requirements: Depending on the current health regulations, vaccinations such as meningitis and COVID-19 may be required.

Application Process: The application can be filled out online, and once approved, the e-visa is emailed to the applicant. This process typically takes up to two weeks.
